BEAN DUBH AN GHLEANNA [1], AN. AKA - "Moll dubh a' ghleanna." Irish, Slow Air (3/4 time). Ireland, Connemara. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The Irish is pronounced 'Ban dhuv an glanna'. It is one of the great love songs and airs in the Irish repertoire and has been identified as a Connemara melody, a variant of "Seamas Og Pluincead" (Young James Plunkett). "Maiden (The)" and "Dark Maiden of the Valley (The)" are simpler forms of the tune. O'Neill's tune version is also known as "Death of Staker Wallace (1) (The)," also published by Roche in 1912. The air was entered in volume 1 (p. 261) of the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman.
