CHAMPION HORNPIPE [4], THE. English, Hornpipe. E Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The "Champion Hornpipe" is credited in Köhlers’ Violin Repository (Edinburgh, 1881-1885) to the great 19th century fiddler and composer James Hill, of Tyneside, Newcastle, renowned for his hornpipe compositions. The title honors Harry Clasper [1] (1812-1870), a Tyneside professional rower and boat builder who assisted in the development of the racing shell. Clasper won numerous rowing races, including the Durham Regatta Single Sculls race in 1842 and the Thames Regatta in 1845 (and six other times thereafter).
