HIGHLAND WATCH [1], THE (NOW THE 42nd REGT. OR ROYAL HIGHLANDERS). Scottish, March or Strathspey (whole or cut time). E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB: AABB (Dow, White). The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment is better-known as the famous Black Watch, first raised in 1739 under John, the Earl of Crawford. O'Farrell directs: "Very Slow." As "42nd Highland Regiment" the strathspey was printed in William Bradbury Ryan's Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883). "Highland Watch" was entered into vol. 4 (p. 159) of the large music manuscript collection of County Cork uilleann piper and Church of Ireland Cleric James Goodman (1828-1896), probably obtained from O'Farrell's collection.
