NAW MAP HARTH (Nine Brave Boys). AKA - "Flowers in the Valley." England, Song Air (whole time). England, Cornwall. D Mixolydian or D Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. The tune song was reconstructed by Cornish musician Merv Davey from fragments found in folklorist Cecil Sharp's manuscripts (MSS 217). The English translation of the Cornish words begins:
There was a widow all forlorn; Nine brave boys from her body were born; Flowers that were in the valley; The harp, the lute, the fife, and the cymbal; Sweet goes the treble violin; Flowers that were in the valley.
Additional notes Source for notated version : - Cecil Sharp was sent the song from William Gilbert who noted it from Thomas
Williams of St Mawgan in Pydar. Davey notes that Baring-Gould also had the song "Mr Old of St Mawgan and a Mary Gilbert who had apparently learned it from Thomas Williams before he died in 1881."
