ARTHUR'S SEAT [2]. Scottish, Reel. E Major. Standard tuning. AABBCCDD. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833), first published in his 1781 Collection. Susan Cowie, in her book The Life and Times of William Marshall (1999), writes that Marshall, in his position of House Steward for Gordon Castle, accompanied the Duke of Gordon and his family on their frequent trips to Edinburgh. It was the Duke’s custom to climb Arthur’s Seat on the first of May with his old friend, Professor Andrew Duncan, a habit they continued into Duncan’s eightieth year.
