Tune properties and standard notation
JACK COUGHLAN'S (REEL). AKA - "Jack Coughlan's Fancy," "John Carty's," "Kevin Crawford's." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Jack Coughlan, who composed the tune, was a flute player from Ballinakill, the same part of County Galway as Black's source, Mike Rafferty. Coughlan was a member of the 'new' Ballinakill Ceilí Band in the 1940's, according to Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin (1999), made up of the 'next' generation of traditional musicians, including flute and time whistle player Eddie Moloney, Aggie Whyte, Jack Coughlan and Kevin Moloney.
Source for notated version: Bill Black learned this tune at Mike Rafferty's retirement party in May 1989; New Jersey flute player Mike Rafferty, born in Ballinakill, Co. Galway, in 1926 [Harker].
