JOHN McKENNA'S [1]. AKA and see "Bird in the Cage," "Gardiner's Favourite (1)," "London Lasses (1)," "Maid in the Rushes (The)," "Streams in the Valley." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title stems from the recording by flute player John McKenna and fiddler James Morrison, issued as "Streams in the Valley," in a medley with "Gardiner's Favorite." An influential musician, McKenna's name became associated with the tune. Since "Gardiner's Favorite" was listed first in the medley, that title also became associated with the "Stream in the Valley" tune.

Source for notated version: accordion player Johnny O'Leary (Sliabh Luachra region of the Cork-Kerry border) [Moylan].

Printed sources: Breathnach (CRÉ II); No. 170, p. 89 (appears as "An Gearrchaile sa Luachair/The Maid in the Rushes"). Moylan (Johnny O'Leary), 1994; No. 243, pp. 140-141.
