BEAUTIFUL SWANEE RIVER HORNPIPE. American (originally), Canadian; Hornpipe. Canada; Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Cole): AA'BB' (Kerr). Composition credited to Harry Carleton in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883). Apparently, the tune was picked up by the Scot Kerr from Ryan's Mammoth Collection (the progenitor of Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes), and from either source was picked up by Prince Edward Island fiddler MacDonald.
Sources for notated versions: Francis MacDonald, b. 1940 (Morell Rear, North-East Kings County, Prince Edward Island) [Perlman]; Winston Fitzgerald (1914-1987, Cape Breton) [Cranford].
