The title is derivative of the French term "allemande," referring to a style of German dance, characteristically moderate in tempo. Williamson suggests the title refers to an allemande used among Scottish Morris dancers, and notes that Morris dancing in that country was first referred to by James I (1406-37) in his poem "Christkirk on the Green." From the Skene MS, c. 1620.
