CHALFORD BOTTOM. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody and dance directions first appeared in John Hinton's periodical Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1755). It also appeared in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758). Chalford Bottom is the name of a valley in Gloucester, through which runs the River Froome. It was a cloth manufacturing center in the 18th century, with some estates.
