BIRCHARD'S HORNPIPE. Old-Time, Hornpipe or Breakdown. D Major. Standard tuning. AA'BB'. A popular "old-time" tune composed in the 1970's by California fiddler Michael Springer, often mistaken as a traditional tune. The tune also has considerable currency among contra-dance musicians. It was named for Barbara Burchard, of Venice Beach, who traded shiatsu massage treatments for fiddle lessons for her husband John.
