BLACK HORSE [1], THE. Irish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Although it has no known connection with Roche's tune, The Black Horse was a famous 19th century inn at Birdlip, Gloucestershire, that featured an interesting collection of fossils, ancient flint weapons, old coins, pictures and other curiosities in its public rooms. In an era with few museums, establishments like this were sure to draw patrons. Printed source: Roche Collection, 1913; vol. 2, No. 237, p. 19.
