The title may be associated with Charles (Bell) Bell, IIIrd Laird of Craigfoodie (bef. 1718 - 1785) of Cupar, Fife, or his elder brother Andrew, the IInd Laird. Craigfoodie is the name of a mansion in Dairsie, a parish to the northeast of Fife. There may be a play of words going on in the title, between "Bell" and "Belle", as indicated by the article 'The' preceding the name bell. It may be the air was named for 'the belle of craigfoodie', a female member of the family.
