MILLBURN [2], THE. AKA - "Milburn." Canadian, Hornpipe. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by fiddler/composer Wilfred Gillis who titled it after the name of an area near Arisaig, Antigonish County, Nova Scotia, where he was brought up. Paul Cranford (1997) remarks that in the 18th century a British man-of-war named The Malignant sank and the surrounding area became known as Malignant Cove. Later, some of the Scottish community members did not think it seemly that their beautiful area was associated with such a tragedy and they were successful in renaming it Millburn, though the original name, Malignant Cove, is still in use. Gillis was a member of the famed Cape Breton Symphony.
