A Scottish fiddler and composer, Marshall is most famous for his many fine strathspeys. Marshall worked for much of his life for the Duke of Gordon as the Steward of his Household, and it is fortunate that the Duke was an enthusiastic supporter and patron of Marshall’s music. Marshall presumably composed the jig for a daughter of Sir George Macpherson-Grant (1781-1846), 1st Baronet of Ballindalloch, and his wife Mary Carnegy, whom he married in 1803. Macpherson-Grant (the first of the hyphenated name) was a Member of Parliament.
