MRS. YOUNG'S STRATHSPEY--OF BANFF [1]. Scottish, Strathspey. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by William Marshall (1748-1833). Moyra Cowie (The Life and Times of William Marshall, 1999) finds that Mrs. Young was Jane Donaldson of Kinaiardy (Kinnairdy) Castle, who married Archibald Young. Young was the Duke of Gordon’s solicitor in Banff, whom Marshall would have come into contact with in his position as Steward of the Household to the Duke. The couple married in 1797 in Banff, and Young is described as a "writer" in the published wedding notices.
