VALSE DE CHEZ NOUS (Waltz from Home). French-Canadian, Waltz (3/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCC'D. Ethnomusicologist Jean Duval notes "Valse de chez nous" is reminiscent of other period waltzes in the first strain, such as "Aggie's Mazurka/Waltz," "Patrick Kelly('s Waltz)" and "Mrs. Kenny." He finds J.O. Madeleine's "Valse chérie" to be a version of Gauthier's melody. Joseph Allard's "Valse du coq" also is similar.

In fact, the first strain can be traced to "Fanny Elsler's Spanish Cachuca," printed dateing to the mid-19th century and printed in the Howe publications of Boston and on single-issue sheets. Fanny Elssler (1810-1884) was an Austrian ballerina who introduced interpretations of character and folk dances into ballet. In 1836 she premiered the role of Fiorina in the ballet Le Diable Boiteux by French composer Casimir Gide. The biggest hit from that ballet was the Cachucha, a Spanish folk dance. In the 1840's, she toured America and Europe, performing many of her favorite dances, including the Cachucha.
