WHAT MEIKLE SORROW AILS YOU. AKA "What meckle sorrow ails you." AKA and see "What the De'il ails you? (1)." Scottish, Reel (cut time). D Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in the Drummond Castle Manuscript (1734, No. 43), in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster at Drummond Castle). It is inscribed "A Collection of the best Highland Reels written by David Young, W.M. & Accomptant." The reel was also included in Young's Bodleian Manuscript (in the Bodleian Library, Oxford), inscribed "A Collection of the Newest Country Dances Performed in Scotland written at Edinburgh by D.A. Young, W.M. 1740," The melody was also included by Edinburgh fiddler and writing master Young in his Bodelian Manuscript and his MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1740, No. 119, p. 182), compiled for Walter MacFarlane of MacFarlane, his patron at the time.
