WILD OATS [1]. Irish; Jig (6/8 time). England, Northumberland. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. O’Farrell (c. 1805) lists the tune as “Irish.” The title may have derived from musical material attached to Dublin actor and playwright wikipedia:John_O'Keefe's (1747-1833) play Wild Oats. Published in 1792, the work was one of his most famous, and it was performed several times on the same bill at Covent Garden with Oscar and Malvina, the play that piper O’Farrell performed in for so many years.

"Wild Oats" is one of the "missing tunes" from William Vickers' 1770 Northumbrian dance tune manuscript, and may or may not be the same one as printed by O'Farrell.
