BATTLE OF CLONTARF, THE. Irish, March (2/4 time). G Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "Calling the clans to battle." "From a piper named Fogarty of Carrick-on-Suir. I find an identical setting of this in one of Mr. Pigot's books, which was copied from a MS. lent him by Mr. Denny Lane of Cork. Petrie has a version of this fine old march in his Ancient Music of Ireland (p. 31), with the name 'The Return From Fingal' (i.e. after the battle, Fingal being the district in which Clontarf is situated); but he does not state the source from which he procured it. The setting given here is somewhat simpler than Petrie's, and I think better and more characteristic. It has a fine martial swing, tinged with melancholy" (Joyce).
