Boyle O'Reilly's
BOYLE O'REILLY'S. Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. New York musician, researcher and writer Don Meade identifies John Boyle O'Reilly as an Irish expatriate who published poetry and edited The Pilot, a Boston Catholic newspaper that ran from 1876 until his death in 1890. O'Reilly was born near Drogheda in 1844, took part in the Fenian movement as both a writer and an agent. He was sent to England where he was quickly arrested and sentenced to death. At the last minute his execution was stayed and instead he was exiled to the penal colony in Australia. After a year he managed to escape with the help of the American captain of a New Bedford whaler, which landed him in Boston (all before the age of 25). He used his newspaper as a pulpit for liberal causes in Ireland and America, and is remembered for his charm and wit, and dedication to the Irish cause.
