ADVENTURE AT MARGATE, AN. English, Jig. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears in Thomas Skillern’s Compleat Collection of Two Hundred & Four Reels…Country Dances (London, 1780). The title perhaps comes from the play Summer Amusement, or an Adventure at Margate written by Miles Peter Andrews (1742-1814) in conjunction with William Augustus Miles, performed in 1779 in the Haymarket. Andrews was a playwright, gunpowder manufacturer and a Member of Parliament (1796-1814) from Bewdley. The play was staged again as the main piece at the Haymarket Theatre in June, 1789.
