Annotation:Alchurch

Alchurch. English, Country Dance Tune (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. The melody was introduced in Henry Playford's Dancing Master, edition eight, in 1690, and appeared in all subsequent editions through the 18th and last edition of 1728 (then published by John Young). It can also be found in John Walsh's Compleat Country Danceing Master (London, 1718). Alchurch, according to Graham Christian (2015) was named for the Herefordshire town of Alvechurch or Alchurch, the location of a long-running fair on the occasion of St. Lawrence's Day (August 10th).
