Annotation:Auld Yowe Jumpt O'er the Tether

John French (1753-1803) had a set of this tune which so impressed the poet Robert Burns (who was always on the lookout for good tunes to set his songs to) that he tried in 1793 (via the town provost) to get copies of it (Alburger, 1983).
