Annotation:Captain Decateur's Hornpipe
Appearance
(Redirected from Captain Decateur's Hornpipe)
CAPTAIN DECATEUR'S HORNPIPE. American, Hornpipe. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was printed in Samuel Holyoke's Instrumental Assistant (Exeter, New Hampshire, 1800). The title may honor American naval commander Stephen Decatur, Sr. (1751-1808), who became a captain during the American War of Independence and later Commodore in the United States Navy. His son, Stephen Decatur Jr. (1779-1820) joined the navy at age 19 in 1798, and rose through the ranks quickly to became the youngest captain in the history of the American Navy. However, as this was not until 1802, it post-dates the appearance of the hornpipe in Holyoke's tutor.
