DRUNKEN PIPER [1], THE. AKA and see "Highland Rory (2)." English, Reel: Scottish (originally), Canadian; March (2/4 time). Canada; Cape Breton, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick. A Dorian (Kennedy, Raven): A Minor (Martin): A Mixolydian (Cranford, Glen, Perlman). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Kennedy, Raven): AABB' (Martin, Perlman)" AABB'CCDD' (Cranford, Glen). David Glen credits the tune to Alexander MacLeod and gives the date 1862 for the composition in his c. 1876 bagpipe collection. The tune has long been a standard among many Cape Breton fiddlers and pipers. See also William Ross's pipe march "Highland Rory (2)" and the Donegal variant "March of the Meenatoiteen Bull (The)."
