GIGUE DES CAPUCHONS (Hood Dance or Capuchons' Reel). AKA - "Reel des capuchons," "Capuchons' reel." AKA and see "Reel de l'allumeur." French-Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. A capuchon is an item of apparel--a hood that covers the head. Source Joseph Allard (1873-1947) recorded the jig in 1933 with a measure of 9/8 time on one turn of each strain ^[1], although the jig can also be heard frequently in "square" versions for contra-dancing. Allard re-recorded the tune in 1937 under a different title, "Reel de l'allumeur."

"Big Chief (1)" in E.F. Adam's Old Time Fiddlers Favorite Barn Dance Tunes (St. Louis, 1928) has a second strain that is similar to "Gigue des capuchons."
