HAPPY COUPLE [2], THE. English, Jig. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody appears first in print (as do many in Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 collection) in John Johnson's Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (London, 1751). The preceding melody in the collection is "Kendal House," the residence of King George I's notorious mistress, the Dutchess of Kendal (George's 1st wife having been long disposed of in Germany through divorce and imprisonment). Does "The Happy Couple" refer to this liason?
