Perhaps refers to urban police forces of the turn of the century in such cities as Chicago and New York, which were heavily Irish. Ryan included another version of the reel in his Mammoth Collection (1883) as "New Policeman (2)." Another version (Grier No. 265) was entered into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894).
