JACKSON'S MAID [3]. AKA - "Mona Rhua." AKA and see "Roll Her in the Rushes (1)." Irish, Reel (cut time). D Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). The reel "Jackson's Maid [3]" appears in curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan's (1878-1952) music manuscript collection in the Department of Irish Folklore, University College, Dublin^[1]. Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor notes that the alternate title, "Mona Rhua", appears in the index to the collection but was apparently added later.

Researchers Fr. John Quinn and Conor Ward find cognate melodies in Kerr's "Roll Her in the Rushes (1)" and, somewhat more distantly, County Leitrim musician biography:Stephen Grier's "New Christmas Eve (2)."

↑ Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor came to believe the ms. is not the work of the curate but rather was originally compiled by an unknown but able fiddler over the course of a playing lifetime, probably in the late 19th century. The ms. later came into the possession of Donnellan, who was also a fiddler.
