MRS. ARNOT. Scottish, Reel (cut time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1766 first collection (p. 60), published in Edinburgh by Robert Bremner. The reel also appears in Riddell's second collection of 1782 (printed in Glasgow by James Aird), an expanded edition of his first volume. The title honors, perhaps, a member of the Arnot family of Dalquhatswood, in the parish of Loudoun, near Galston, Ayrshire. James Arnot became factor to John, fourth Earl of Loudoun, and had seven children.
