The first two parts were composed by Duncan MacDonald of Castle Grant in 1863, and the last two by Pipe Major G.S. MacLennan, appearing in his Highland Bagpipe Music book 1 (1929). Christine Martin (2002) says the tune is often played as a stately pipe march in competitions, and warns it should not be speeded up.
