BELGIA RETRIEVED. AKA - "Belgia Retriv'd." English, Country Dance Tune/Jig (6/4 or 6/8 time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Belgia Retrieved" was published in all four editions of London publisher John Young's Second Volume of the Dancing Master (1710-1728). It also appears in rival publishers Walsh and Randall's The New Country Dancing Master, Second Book (1710), Walsh and Hare's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing-Master (1719) and their The New Country Dancing Master, Third Book (1728).
The title refers to the War of the Spanish Succession [1] (1701–1714), in which Great Britain, the Dutch Republic and the Holy Roman Empire fought against France. Much of the conflict was played out in Belgium, and by 1708 the French forces had been defeated in the north, largely due to the effective leadership of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy.
