Tyson" states the note in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883), an as-yet unknown performer (see also his "Bella Union" reel). Al Smitley suggests the tune may possibly have been named for either a warship, clipper ship or a bark called Defiance, a name that does appear in American Clipper Ships 1833-1858 by Howe and Matthews.
