The song was printed in George Farquhar Graham's Songs of Scotland (1848, p. 70), who remarks: "A modern Jacobite song--very popular of late years. Neither the author of the words nor the author of the music is known." The lyric begins:
He's o'er the hills I lo'e weel,
He's o'er the hills we daurna name;
He's o'er the hills ayont Dumblane,
Wha soon will get his welcome hame.
