ISLINGTON ASSEMBLY. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune first appeared in John Hinton's London-published periodical The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure in July, 1754 (p. 29). Subsequently it appeared in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 7 (London, 1756), and Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 country dance collection.
Charles Rivington's journal [see Septimus Rivington's The Publishing House of Rivington, 1894] entry for February 16th, 1779, reads:
Went to Islington Assembly. There was very little company there. We made up only eight couples. I danced with Miss Roberts. We had two cotillons after the country dances, and a minuet. I passed a very agreeable evening.
