The melody, like many in Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 collection, first appeared in John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 7 (London, 1756). It was entered into the large 1840 music manuscript collection of multi-instrumentalist John Rook (Waverton, Cumbria) as "New Jigg."
