KATHLEEN LAWRIE'S WEDDING. Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. Composed by County Roscommon flute player Josie McDermott in honor of the wedding of Kathleen Lawrie to Tommy Boyle of County Tyrone. Séamus Connolly (2002), in his note with the tune, says the family of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Lawrie was a center of gravity in the Birmingham, England, Irish music scene. Mrs. Lawrie played fiddle, and daughters Kathleen and Margaret played in the Birmingham Céilí Band with her. Josie McDermott was a frequent visitor to the Lawrie household, as were many other musicians who played Irish traditional music, including Connolly, Paul Brock, Brendan Mulvihill, Catherine McEvoy and Séamus Shannon, and, when Kathleen, a piano and piano accordion player, married the drummer of the band, he composed this reel. See also McDermott's composition "Trip to Birmingham (A)."
