Séamus Connolly (2002), in his note with the tune, says the family of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Lawrie was a center of gravity in the Birmingham, England, Irish music scene. Mrs. Lawrie played fiddle, and daughters Kathleen and Margaret played in the Birmingham Céilí Band with her. Josie McDermott was a frequent visitor to the Lawrie household, as were many other musicians who played Irish traditional music, including Connolly, Paul Brock, Brendan Mulvihill, Catherine McEvoy and Séamus Shannon, and, when Kathleen, a piano and piano accordion player, married the drummer of the band, he composed this reel.
