John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of this tune in print in Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John Riddell's 1782 collection (p. 30). Riddell had published his Collection of Scots Reels, Minuets, etc. in Edinburgh in 1766, but republished it ("much improved"), in 1782, issued by James Aird in Glasgow.
