The MacKenzies of Gairloch are descended from Hector Roy Mackenzie of Gairloch [1] (d. 1528), who was a prominent member of the Mackenzie clan and who acquired vast estates in and around Gairloch as a result of his services to the Scottish crown. The lands of Gairloch were still owned by Hector Roy's descendants into the 20th century, over 500 years after they were acquired.
