The melody is attributed to blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738) in Charles, Anne and Samuel Thompson's Hibernian Muse (London, c. 1770). O'Sullivan was unable to trace the person for whom Carolan composed this piece, although he noted there were people named Harwood in Ireland in the harper's time.
