KETTLE BENDER. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was also used as the vehicle for a song (Air XII) in the ballad opera Midas (1764). The composer Marella fashioned a concerto out of "Kettle Bender" with variations, around 1751. A 'kettle bender' could refer to various things. A 'kettle bender' was often the resort of the poor who sometimes had little to eat for breakfast, a bread sop that consisted of "a cup of crusts with hot wataer, pepper and salt, and a knob of margarine." There was also a racehorse called Kettle Bender in the mid-18th century, and a merchant ship called Kettle Bender was lost at sea in 1786.
