SCALDED POOR BOY, THE. Irish, Air (3/4 time). E Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). One part. Collector, artist and antiquarian George Petrie [1] (1790-1866) had two airs called "Scalded Poor Boy," both obtained from a younger collector, Patrick Weston Joyce [2] (1827-1914). These airs, variants of one-another, are different than another of Joyce's airs with the similar title “Scalded Poor Man (The),” printed in Old Irish Folk Music and Songs (1909). As with "Scalded Poor Man", the word 'scalded' in this context means 'vexed'.
