WOOTON UNDERHEDGE ASSEMBLY. AKA – “Wotton Underedge Assembly,” “Wooton Undridge Assembly.” English, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody, like many in Charles and Samuel Thompson’s 1757 country dance collection, was first published in John Hinton’s periodical Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, October, 1753, p. 175) as "Wotton-Underedge Assembly". It later appeared (as did many of Hinton's country dances) in John Johnson’s 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 7 (London, 1756). Johnson’s title was “Wooton Undridge Assembly.” The title refers to the Gloucester market town of Wotton-under-Edge (the Edge being a limestone escarpment), a center for the wool trade in the Cotswolds. See also another tune named for the town, “Wotton Underhedge Fair.”
