CORELLI'S GAVOT. English, Gavot. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody occurs in the final movement of Italian composer Archangelo Corelli's Trio Sonata op. 2, No. 1 (1685). It was printed with a country dance in Daniel Wright's Compleat Collection (vol. 1, London, c. 1740, printed by John Johnson). See also the variant "Mr. Cosgill’s Delight."
Source for notated version: the music manuscript book of Captain George Bush (1753?-1797), a fiddler and officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. Bush had evidently copied it from a tutor for the fife printed in Philadelphia in 1776, thought to be reprinted by George Willig around 1805 [Keller].
Printed source: Keller (Fiddle Tunes from the American Revolution), 1992; p. 17. Wright (Wright's Compleat Collection of Celebrated Country Dances), 1740; p. 75.
