MONTEZUMA. American, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. A title probably inspired by the Mexican-American War. The tune was attributed to a veteran army musician named J.L. Blatchley, Co. E. 2nd N.Y. Heavy Artillery, by A.F. Hopkins, editor of the American Veteran Fifer (1905) (see also "Annotation:J.L. Blatchley Banter"). Hopkins, however, is inconsistent in his attributions, and what look to be composer credits are often contributor credits.
