NARROWBACK, THE. AKA and see "Great North Reel," "Irish-American Reel (The)," "Lee's Double Clog." American, Irish; Reel. The term 'narrowback' was used to refer to Irish immigrants to America in the 19th century. It sometimes had the connotation of a social climber; one whose 'shoulders were not broad enough to carry the traditions of the Irish people'.
