New York City writer, researcher and musician Don Meade believes this refers to one of two fiddler brothers, James and Johnny Hand, active in the Massachusetts area in the mid-19th century, to whom several tunes in the collection are attributed. However, several of the other tunes attributed to J. Hand were in fact a styling of an existing tune.
