WOLVES IN THE WOOD. Old-Time, Waltz or Listening Piece (3/4 time). A Mixolydian. Standard or AEae tuning (fiddle). A modal tune in fast ¾ time from the playing of fiddler Thomas Jefferson "Duck Wootan" (1882-1964). Wootan recorded a few record sides on a home recording machine in 1958 at his home near Junction, Texas, this piece among them. "Duck" was the grandfather of Austin, Texas, fiddler Tim Wooten, who now plays his grandsire's instrument and performs with the Duck Creek String Band. Duck's last name is spelled with an 'a' because that was the way the army spelled in when he was inducted in World War II; the bureaucratic obstacles were too daunting to correct the mistake.
