HIGHWAY TO COILSFIELD. Scottish, Reel (whole time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in John Riddell's 1782 collection (p. 16). Coilsfield House, an estate in the parish of Tarbolton, Ayrshire, was the home of Col. Hugh Montgomerie, 12th Earl of Eglinton. "Soldier Hugh" was also an excellent amateur musician, to whom Nathaniel Gow dedicated his fourth collection. Gow also published in 1796 a volume of Montgomerie's own compositions. See note for "annotation:Coilsfield House" for more.
